In order to Potential of Cloud Computing to understand, it is important to Advantages of the technology ato put them together. Using a cloud provider brings a number of advantages. We would like to take a look at what these are in the following.

Advantages of cloud providers

With a cloud provider, companies always have access to all their data because it is not stored on a specific device. Only one user account is required to access all data stored in the cloud. This also contributes to security, as the respective provider takes care of the security of the data and, in addition, the data is located off-site. In the event of a fire, burglary or cyber attack, not all data will be gone at once. Location-independent access is also good for teamwork. The fact that every authorized user can access company data externally facilitates the exchange of information and makes it possible to work together towards a specific goal. In general, organizational flexibility increases with the use of cloud computing. Not to mention the fact that IT administration effort is reduced and costs for server hardware are eliminated. In addition to all these factors, unlimited storage space is another factor to be mentioned. In theory, there is no limit, as more storage can be added at any time for a fee.

In summary, companies benefit from these advantages:

  • Location-independent data access
  • High data security
  • More organizational flexibility
  • Simplified teamwork
  • Low IT administration effort
  • No costs for server hardware
  • Unlimited storage space

There is no doubt that the above-mentioned advantages speak for cloud providers. However, clouds, like other technologies, do not just bring benefits. We should therefore also take a look at some disadvantages.

Disadvantages of cloud providers

The biggest disadvantage of clouds is their dependency. On the one hand, companies are dependent on a functioning Internet connection. On the other hand, they make themselves dependent on a cloud provider. The company data is therefore only in safe hands if the respective provider is reputable and attaches importance to data protection. Otherwise, theoretically there could even be a loss of data. Another factor is the fact that the use of appropriate IT infrastructures can result in low speed. It is not uncommon for local systems to perform better in this respect. In addition, cloud providers cannot be used free of charge above a certain amount of data.

In summary, this results in the following disadvantages:

  • Need for a working Internet connection
  • dependence on the respective cloud provider
  • data security concerns
  • Reduced speed where appropriate
  • Chargeable from higher data volumes

These disadvantages should not be ignored, but are manageable given the advantages of the technology

Conclusion

By using cloud providers, companies benefit from a variety of advantages that can contribute to greater efficiency and cost savings. Although there are also disadvantages, these are not necessarily a problem. A good example would be dependence on an external service provider. This disadvantage is only of concern if a dubious provider is chosen. On the other hand, if the cloud provider is reliable, data security is even higher. Similarly, there are some other negative aspects, because in the end it is the advantages that outweigh the disadvantages. We would even go so far as to say that cloud computing is one of the most important innovations of digitization
