Not every website owner needs a CDN and above all Private individuals, which is a Website exclusively for fun operate, the save additional costs. For companies, on the other hand, the situation is quite different.

In principle, every company should at least consider using a CDN. Whether a CDN makes sense depends on various factors and some companies can do without it despite the advantages it offers. Let's take a specialty bakery store as an example. For a specialty bakery business, the customer base will be predominantly regional and even if having your own website isn't a bad thing, one isn't likely to generate much traffic. Apart from the fact that most of the sales are unlikely to come through the website, a CDN would not bring any particular improvement anyway. Neither is high traffic to be expected, nor is the website of a regional bakery specialty store likely to have many visitors. If, on the other hand, it is a streaming service for movies, for example, the whole thing looks different.

CDNs in companies - content and reach are crucial

Faster loading times are not wrong, but as the above example should have made clear, a CDN is not always necessary for companies. At least regional companies should think carefully about whether they decide for or against a CDN .

There are two criteria in particular that need to be taken into account.

Content
First of all, there is the content. If a website consists mainly of text, the loading times are usually good anyway. However, if images, videos, downloads or even multimedia content are added, this can have a massive impact on the speed. Since doing without them is usually bad for both SEO and user satisfaction, the use of a CDN is recommended if necessary

Reach
The next factor is the reach of the website. For a company in Germany that mainly has customers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, a centrally located main server whose performance corresponds to the amount of traffic is usually sufficient. If, on the other hand, international customers outside the DACH region are added, the use of a CDN is almost mandatory . Otherwise, a significant proportion of visitors must expect long loading times, which is not exactly conducive to business. How high the loading times ultimately turn out depends largely on the amount of traffic. For this reason, websites with a lot of traffic (especially international) should actually always think about a CDN since it is usually the best solution.

CDNs do not only provide content of websites

Although CDNs re primarily used to deliver website content, they can also be used for other content. Basically, this applies to all types of digitizable data. Especially in times of digital transformation, every company should be aware of this.
